The Schooner Helena in the Wake of the Swan is a vibrant account of the sail training voyages undertaken by the Finnish schooner Helena pursuing the trail of the legendary frigate Suomen Joutsen, the Swan of Finland. In the 1930s, the Suomen Joutsen made eight transoceanic voyages to four continents in the capacity of a training ship of the Finnish Navy. The Helena, a schooner of the Finnish Sail Training Association, followed the example of her predecessor with two expeditions in the 2000s: she went through an autumn storm in the Bay of Biscay, was becalmed in the Atlantic, and sailed around the notorious Cape Horn. Most of her crew were young people being taught the basics of sailing under a professional principal crew.
In addition to maritime adventures, the book provides the reader with diverse facts about ocean life, such as how to build team spirit, supply food, or deal with the formalities of ports and the weather conditions in South America.
