Ahlström Pumps’ total turnover was about FIM 500 million. There were production plants in Finland and the United States of America. Mänttä Pump Factory had reduced its throughput times from four weeks to five days through a program of investment and the introduction of JIT production philosophies. It acted as the benchmark company for the other pump manufacturing units.
The product line management group decided to start up the next phase of the improvement program. This time improvement must include other business processes as well as manufacturing and at a local and global level.
A working group was set up to examine how best to exploit the principles of process management in Ahlström Pumps business operations.
The working group developed a process management model that was applicable to its circumstances. The management group decided to use this model and start up three process improvement projects as pilot projects. The pilot processes were the Customer Convincing Process, the Impeller Delivery Process, and the Customer Complaint Process.
One of the pilot projects, the improvement of the Impeller Delivery Process, was later expanded to cover the delivery of the whole pump delivery process.
The book presents also the case of improvement of the Product Development Process at Ahlstrom Chemrec Product Line including benchmarking material from Ahlstrom Pyropower.
