Dirk Hoyer’s work makes a substantial contribution to two areas within the field of Fine Art research. First, it provides an original and broadly persuasive account of the development and relevance of the concept of utopia and utopian strategies within the western contemporary art generally, and in particular its role in the way artists seek to articulate a social imaginary.
Second, it provides a detailed examination of the attitudes of artists in Estonia to the possibility of social and political change, the role of art in this and the complexity of their understandings of utopia and strategies that might be termed utopian. In this latter respect, the dissertation is a very significant contribution to knowledge.
