In 1993, the Board of Ahlstrom Machinery decided to instigate a joint development program for all four product lines. The precedents were ABB’s Customer Focus and Rauma Oy’s P500 Corporate level programs.
A working group was formed. The group carried out interviews throughout the organization and on the basis of these, they identified an area of interest to everyone; implementation of strategic plans.
It was generally felt that strategic planning was well directed, they were able to formulate plans and the content was good too. However, there were felt to be serious shortcomings in implementation. Many of the points of the strategic plan were bullet points with no explanation; most of the issues covered by the plan were never even started up.
The following objective was set: “To turn the strategic plans into development projects and to implement the projects”.
We started up the program. We drew up a simple instruction for planning strategic projects. The product lines analysed their strategy, prioritized their development targets and drew up a two to three page project plan for each one.
